Cardboard Boxes are typically made from corrugated fiberboard. The manufacturing process used to make the typical wooden box uses less material than making a cardboard box, so the costs of a wooden box must be offset by higher production costs. The words corrugated fiberboard are sometimes used interchangeably in the industry because they stem from the same manufacturing technique of corrugating a thin sheet of paper around a thin piece of wood. The difference is subtle, but modern corrugated boxes use flat sheets of corrugated fiberboard and embossed (texturized) flutes between the folds which allow for improved stiffness and strength.
Since the shipping and transportation industry first began, cardboard boxes have been a main feature. In today’s consumer-based world, however, there are three main types of box categories:
1. Loose or Open Boxes are common in big box store deliveries where the consumer takes possession of the package and transports it themselves to its final location.
2. Trays or Assembled Units are often called “kits” as they come fully assembled and can be stacked on top of one another in storage areas. However, they must be broken down into individual units before use, which takes much longer than an open or loose box.
3. Pre-Assembled Units or Unitized products are made as one piece with either corrugated foam paper or polyethylene film adhered to their outsides for individual pieces that are shipped to the end user already assembled.
